Senior Software Engineer (Android Platform) Hiring Organization: Southwest Airlines Employment Type: Full-Time, Remote Salary Range: $20 - $30 per hour Location: Remote within the USA (excluding Alaska, Delaware, New Jersey, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming) Job Summary At Southwest Airlines, our mission is to connect people to what matters most in their lives through friendly, reliable, and affordable air travel. We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Android Platform team. In this role, you will design, develop, test, and implement high-quality software solutions for the Southwest App. You’ll contribute to critical technical decisions, mentor team members, and play a key role in driving the core user experience for our customers. This position offers an opportunity to grow your technical expertise, work collaboratively, and help shape the future of technology at Southwest Airlines—all while working remotely. Key Responsibilities Lead the technical direction and roadmap for large-scale cloud-based systems. Serve as a technical leader for development teams, including internal and external members. Evaluate requirements and design solutions aligned with organizational goals. Collaborate with product managers and stakeholders to define feature requirements. Champion continuous improvement by researching and implementing new technologies. Write, test, and maintain efficient, scalable, and maintainable code. Review code for structure, standards compliance, and compatibility across systems. Mentor and train software engineers to grow technical skills and capabilities. Stay current with industry trends and tools through training, networking, and participation in professional organizations. Perform other duties as assigned by leadership. Qualifications Required Skills and Competencies: Strong knowledge of software development methodologies, standards, and technologies. Advanced experience with at least one programming language (e.g., Java, Kotlin). Exceptional communication, collaboration, and negotiation skills. Ability to balance and prioritize multiple assignments while maintaining high-quality results. Experience mentoring and leading team members to foster growth and innovation. Proficiency in articulating complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences. Preferred Skills: Expertise in Android development, including tools like Java, Kotlin, Jetpack, Jetpack Compose, and Android Studio. Familiarity with mobile architecture patterns such as MVP and MVVM. Education Required: High school diploma or GED. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent formal training). Preferred: Advanced degrees or certifications in software development or related disciplines. Experience Required: Extensive experience in software development and methodologies. Preferred: Hands-on expertise in mobile application development, especially for Android. Additional Requirements Must be at least 18 years old. Must be a U.S. citizen or authorized to work in the United States (as per the Immigration Reform Act of 1986). Must comply with company appearance and attendance standards. Ability to work from a remote setup with occasional travel for training and meetings. Must be able to communicate effectively in English and operate workplace tools efficiently. Physical Requirements Ability to work from a desk or designated workstation for extended periods. Proficiency in using computers and productivity tools with speed and accuracy.
